Keith Famie: Biography

Keith Famie Whether he's making rice on the hit show Survivor, producing documentaries, or traveling around the world as the host of Keith Famie's Adventures on the Food Network, Keith Famie's face and name have become synonymous with food, travel, and exciting adventure. In 2000, Famie left his chef whites in Michigan and, paella pan in hand, embarked on the experience of a lifetime in the Australian Outback. After battling hunger, floods, and fierce competition, Famie placed third in the last of the remaining survivors.

While Famie's culinary skills were occasionally the brunt of jokes on the series, his culinary career has been distinguished by many accolades and achievements. Born and raised in Farmington, Michigan, Famie began working in restaurants in Europe after high school and completed his formal training at the Lark Restaurant in West Bloomfield, Michigan. He worked at Chez Raphael for five years before opening Les Auteurs, an American Bistro, in 1988. The following year, Famie was named one of Food & Wine magazine's "Ten Best New Chefs" and Esquire magazine recognized Les Auteurs as one of the "Best New Restaurants."

In 1993, Famie began appearing in local television news inserts called "Famie's Adventures in Cooking," which eventually became half-hour segments on Detroit television. In 1996, he opened a new restaurant called Forte and the following year Esquire magazine named it one of the "Top 25 Restaurants in America." Shortly thereafter, Famie resigned from Forte to pursue his interest in television production. He formed Visionalist Entertainment Productions and produced a documentary called "From Hanoi to China Beach: A Taste of the Exotic" that garnered critical acclaim.

Famie enjoys scuba diving, biking, wall climbing, hiking, and volunteering his time with non-profit organizations. He is currently the president of the Rainbow Connection, a group that helps grant wishes for children with life-threatening illnesses in Michigan, and is developing a new organization called ICAN (International Children's Alliance Network), a special internet-based program for children to find international pen pals. Famie has also published a cookbook, Famie's Adventures in Cooking (Sleeping Bear Press, 2000).

He lives in West Bloomfield, Michigan, and has two children, Alicia and Joshua.
